Nita Little

is an improvisational choreographer who is interested in the articulation of presence. Bringing together Contact Improvisation and contemporary dance movement, her work emphasizes states and levels of attention which she scores as the means to derive dancers’ movement relationships and materials.

CURRENT PROJECTS:

Nita has two different projects underway. One is process oriented and engages in the pursuit of performance as research. The other is a new dance film.

1. The Geometry of Attention is series of duets that reveal the visibility of states of inquiry. It engages choreographically by directing dancer's physical attention toward the purpose of recognizing the visible mind that is embodied and that is dancing. It explores this dancing level by highlighting the geometrical frames through which dancers articulate and communicate their tactile negotiations. This research takes place in formal and informal performances in San Francisco.

Please see, "The Geometry of Attention," danced by Rosmary Hannon and Vitali Kononov at:

The video can be considered together with a paper of the same title (see  writings).

2. In a new dance film, Nita brings moving moments of the mind and the body “up close and personal”. In collaboration with director / cinematographer Dusty Nelson and film theorist / director John Zibell as well as with a core of dancers, the film is underway Fall 2011 and Winter 2012. The project weaves our binary notions of urbanity vs. nature in an Alice- in-Wonderlandesque tour down a path of interferences that disturb our grasp of ‘the real’. In making the film, Nita is asking the questions: "What does dance bring to film that details the performance of presence and that emphasizes the indeterminate nature of the movement between the space of knowing and place of being?” And also, “How does film bring to dance material the visibility of its relationship to the immaterial, the visibility of the dancing mind that seeks to know its passing sense of place? The movement between the dancer and the place of the dance reveals the extraordinary in the ordinary. Ultimately the film asks, “ Where is this dance?” A question to which you, the audience, will have many answers.

Please see Nita's Choreographer's Statement below.

Nita Little Dance Research:

Nita is the artistic director of Nita Little Dance Research Company, a dance improvisation ensemble dedicated to exploring directed states of attention as choreographic material. Based in San Francisco, California, this ensemble creates choreographed works realized through improvisational means.  Working with attentional webs that form between dancers she develops the ground upon which they meet choreographically. Nita's work calls upon both audience and dancers to move beyond the visual field in understanding new and articulate levels of engagement.

WORK IN RECENT HISTORY:

The Urgency of Now The material of this work articulates the distinctions of individual presence while questioning the bodily boundaries of self-identity and the presumptions of a privileged position. In June 2010, Nita performed this trio in Berlin (Schwelle 7) and Paris (Canaldanse) with Stephanie Auberville and Emily Leap.

Divisadero Dance Research, now Nita Little Dance Research, performed an evening length work, VisibleUnseen: A Field Guide to Felt Presence, performed at the University of California, Davis, which was the Practice-as-Research component of Nita’s qualification for a PhD in Performance Studies.

Most recently, 2011, she performed at the São Paulo Meeting of Contact Improvisation with Ray Chung, Ralf Jaroschinski, and Ricardo Neves.
